Origins & Growth
The Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA) was founded in 2005, to unify and guide the emerging nanotechnology industry, dedicated to the safe, sustainable, and beneficial use of nanotechnology across all industries. With headquarters in the United States and the European Union, NIA champions the global nanotechnology industry by influencing policy, fostering innovation, and promoting the essential role of nanotechnology in economic development and positive societal impact.
The NIA shapes global policy and regulations by advising domestic and international bodies that oversee the industry. We keep our members informed about the latest regulations and provide essential support in accessing capital, scaling operations, and promoting nanotechnology adoption across various industries.
As the global voice of the industry, the NIA has also educates consumers and policy makers about the global impact of nanotechnology’s role in everyday life. We work with media to ensure accurate reporting and address questions about its use, including risks and safe development.
Why Nano? Unlocking the Future
Traditional materials have hit the limits of their performance. To stay competitive, industries have turned to nanomaterials and other advanced materials, which represent the future of materials science.
Nanomaterials are driving technological innovation thanks to properties that conventional materials simply lack. At the nanoscale, measured in billionths of a meter, a nanomaterial’s surface area exponentially increases relative to its volume, boosting reactivity and other surface-driven properties. At the same time, quantum mechanical behaviors emerge that dramatically transform the material’s chemical, mechanical, electronic, optical, and magnetic properties.
Companies and product developers harness the unique traits of nanomaterials to create new products that push the limits of what’s possible.
