The European Commission has launched a public consultation on an updated “Safe and Sustainable by Design” (SSbD) framework, seeking stakeholder input to refine this voluntary decision-support tool. The framework is designed to guide the development of safer and more sustainable chemicals and materials throughout their entire lifecycle.

The consultation period runs from July 25 through September 15, 2025, inviting participation from industry representatives, academic researchers, NGOs, and independent experts through an online survey available on the European Commission’s research and innovation portal. Stakeholder feedback collected during this period will directly inform the final Commission Recommendation, which is expected to be released by the end of 2025.

The revised framework represents the Commission’s commitment to advancing sustainable innovation in the chemicals sector while maintaining rigorous safety standards. By opening this consultation to diverse stakeholders, the EU aims to ensure the final framework reflects both practical industry needs and current scientific best practices, ultimately supporting the transition toward more sustainable chemical innovation across Europe.
