The NIA's new Regulatory Committee hit the ground running at its first meeting, immediately turning to live issues including the UK REACH consultation, sustainability standards, and the contested terminology used in nanotechnology regulation.
Open to all Corporate and Associate Members and meeting quarterly, the Committee gives NIA members a direct channel to shape how the association engages with policymakers worldwide.
Newly Launched NIA Regulatory Committee
Summary
The NIA’s newly formed Regulatory Committee held its first meeting on 6 June with members from across Europe and the USA attending. The Regulatory Committee is the first outcome from the NIA’s strategy review and has been formed to assess and address any global regulatory issue, regulation or standard that is current or proposed that may have a bearing on nanomaterials or the interests of NIA members. The Committee will meet quarterly and is open for Corporate and Associate Members to join.
The first meeting was an opportunity for the members to review the Committee’s terms of reference and the current meetings that the NIA regularly attends. The Committee reviewed the agenda for the upcoming OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN) meeting, where the NIA will be attending as part of the Business at OECD (BIAC) delegation. There was also a discussion on some of the upcoming issues that the Committee would like to cover, such as the ongoing consultation on UK REACH, how the NIA should cover sustainability issues, the terminology being used in regulations and standards around nanotechnology and how the NIA can best act as an interface between Members and policymakers.
