The OECD has released Test Guideline (TG) 127, establishing a harmonised approach for measuring the dustiness of materials containing nano-objects and their aggregates and agglomerates (NOAA).

The guideline provides standardised methods for assessing the tendency of powders containing granular or fibrous nano-objects to generate airborne dust during handling and processing. These measurements are important for exposure assessment, workplace safety and risk management, particularly where inhalation of airborne particles may occur.

TG 127 describes six recognised test methods: the Rotating Drum, Small Rotating Drum, Continuous Drop, Vortex Shaker, Fluidizer and Venturi methods. Together, these approaches allow the dust-generating potential of a wide range of nanomaterial-containing powders to be characterised under different testing conditions.

Canada Releases Nanomaterial Risk Assessment Framework Under CEPA

Environment and Climate Change Canada and Health Canada have jointly published a new Framework for the Risk Assessment of Manufactured Nanomaterials under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). The document clarifies how nano-specific characteristics will be factored into regulatory evaluations, confirming that while traditional chemical risk assessment principles remain applicable, they must be supplemented with nano-specific data and characterisation methods. The framework…

How NIA Membership Opened the Door for InFinite Biotech to Shape the Future of Nanomaterial Risk Assessment

At the May 2026 meeting of the ECHA’s Nanomaterial Expert Group (NMEG), NIA Member Infinite Biotech presented a novel “in-vitro-learned digital twin” platform (InFinite™) designed to predict long-term health effects of nanomaterial exposure using advanced New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and digital modelling. The platform combines live cellular monitoring, mechanistic modelling, and in silico disease evolution to generate rapid predictions of long-term toxicity while potentially reducing…
