Summary

  • NIA's new Regulatory Committee is now led by two specialists with deep nanomaterial risk assessment credentials, bringing expertise in grouping, read-across, REACH nanoforms, and ecotoxicology to the role.

NIA members will already have seen the introduction of our new Regulatory Committee the first meeting of which was reported in our last newsletter. We are now able to introduce the new Chair and Vice-Chair to members. The next meeting of the Regulatory Committee will take place in September and members are invited to suggest possible topics of concern for discussion to the NIA’s Director of Regulatory Affairs, Blanca Suarez.

Dr Neil Hunt is the new Chair. He has worked in the regulatory consultancy sector for Yordas Group for 13 years, having previously been a process development chemist in the pharmaceutical sector for 10 years. His work covers all scientific aspects of regulations as evidenced by leading Yordas' exposure and risk assessment services, working with the UK Food Standard Agency to understand the global approaches to using New Approach Methodologies in regulations, and supporting the development of the UK REACH Alternative Transitional Registration model (ATRm) with DEFRA. Over the past decade, Neil has been an active partner in several EU funded projects that have focused on the risk assessment of nanomaterials, recently presenting findings of the SUNSHINE project both to the German competent authorities and to ECHA, and is the author of the guidance documents for the grouping and read-across of nanomaterials from the GRACIOUS project. Away from regulations and chemicals, Neil is an avid golfer which goes some way to explain why he is now based in Scotland.
