The EU Observatory for Nanomaterials (EUON) published a new NanOpinion article on 14 April examining the fate of nanoplastics once ingested through food or drinking water. Simulated gastrointestinal studies suggest that stomach acidity, salts and digestive enzymes may cause nanoplastics to agglomerate, potentially limiting their absorption through the digestive tract. The researchers caution, however, that significant uncertainties around long-term human health effects remain and that further work is needed.
