Australia Consults on New Information Requirements for Nanoscale Chemicals

Summary

Australia is moving towards more detailed reporting requirements for nanoscale chemicals, including information on particle characteristics and surface properties. The proposed measures would introduce nano-specific data requirements through IUCLID from July 2027.

The Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) has consulted on new information requirements for assessment certificate applications covering specified categories of chemical introductions, including chemicals at the nanoscale.

The proposal introduces a range of nano-specific data requirements, including information on particle size and distribution, morphology, surface area, surface chemistry, surface charge and dispersibility. Additional requirements are proposed for certain materials, such as carbon nanotubes, including data on the number of walls and particle dimensions.

Subject to implementation, applicants will be required to submit this information through IUCLID from 1 July 2027 as part of relevant assessment certificate applications. The consultation closed on 8 September 2026.
