Summary

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is seeking input on a proposed framework for qualifying New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) to assess the safety of nanomaterials in food and feed. This initiative aims to make NAMs a reliable alternative to traditional animal testing and encourage their wider use in safety assessments.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is seeking input on a proposed framework for qualifying New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) to assess food and feed safety in relation to nanomaterials. The initiative, part of the NAMs4NANO project, seeks to establish clearer criteria for evaluating the reliability and regulatory relevance of these methods.

This initiative aims to make NAMs a viable alternative to traditional animal testing for food and feed safety assessments. EFSA invites stakeholders to provide feedback on the proposed framework and submit case studies showcasing the practical application of NAMs in regulatory safety assessments. Comments and case study submissions can be sent to MESE@efsa.europa.eu by the deadline of 31 October 2026.

Canada Releases Nanomaterial Risk Assessment Framework Under CEPA

Environment and Climate Change Canada and Health Canada have jointly published a new Framework for the Risk Assessment of Manufactured Nanomaterials under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). The document clarifies how nano-specific characteristics will be factored into regulatory evaluations, confirming that while traditional chemical risk assessment principles remain applicable, they must be supplemented with nano-specific data and characterisation methods. The framework…

How NIA Membership Opened the Door for InFinite Biotech to Shape the Future of Nanomaterial Risk Assessment

At the May 2026 meeting of the ECHA’s Nanomaterial Expert Group (NMEG), NIA Member Infinite Biotech presented a novel “in-vitro-learned digital twin” platform (InFinite™) designed to predict long-term health effects of nanomaterial exposure using advanced New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and digital modelling. The platform combines live cellular monitoring, mechanistic modelling, and in silico disease evolution to generate rapid predictions of long-term toxicity while potentially reducing…
