Summary

A new Nature Materials article co-authored by NIA's Sean Kelly argues that Europe must focus on scaling, manufacturing and deploying advanced materials. The paper identifies five priorities for the forthcoming Advanced Materials Act, including investment, regulation, industrial collaboration and skills development.

NIA Interim Director General Sean Kelly has co-authored a new article in Nature Materials with Professor Paula Vilarinho of the University of Aveiro, outlining key priorities for strengthening Europe's advanced materials ecosystem.

The article builds on discussions held at the Future of Advanced Materials Europe (FAME) workshop in November 2025 and identifies five priorities for the forthcoming Advanced Materials Act:

  • Scale-up infrastructure and pilot facilities

  • Private investment and new financing mechanisms

  • Integrated and efficient regulation

  • Stronger links between materials developers and industry

  • Talent development and industrial expertise

The authors argue that Europe's challenge is no longer inventing advanced materials, but ensuring that promising technologies can be manufactured, scaled and deployed successfully.

Canada Releases Nanomaterial Risk Assessment Framework Under CEPA

Environment and Climate Change Canada and Health Canada have jointly published a new Framework for the Risk Assessment of Manufactured Nanomaterials under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). The document clarifies how nano-specific characteristics will be factored into regulatory evaluations, confirming that while traditional chemical risk assessment principles remain applicable, they must be supplemented with nano-specific data and characterisation methods. The framework…

How NIA Membership Opened the Door for InFinite Biotech to Shape the Future of Nanomaterial Risk Assessment

At the May 2026 meeting of the ECHA’s Nanomaterial Expert Group (NMEG), NIA Member Infinite Biotech presented a novel “in-vitro-learned digital twin” platform (InFinite™) designed to predict long-term health effects of nanomaterial exposure using advanced New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and digital modelling. The platform combines live cellular monitoring, mechanistic modelling, and in silico disease evolution to generate rapid predictions of long-term toxicity while potentially reducing…
