NIA Contributes to ECHA Call for Evidence on Poorly Soluble Low Toxicity Particles (PSLT)

Scientific evaluation of workplace exposure limits | Deadline: 29.09.2025

NIA has responded to ECHA's call for evidence on Poorly Soluble Low Toxicity Particles (PSLTs), specifically addressing occupational exposure limits (OELs). The submission advocates for ECHA to establish a group OEL for PSLTs, with more stringent values for ultrafine or high-surface-area materials—an approach similar to NIOSH's differentiated limits for titanium dioxide.

The association emphasises that any forthcoming framework must be feasible, proportionate, and enforceable. NIA cautions against the premature adoption of complex metrics that could impose disproportionate regulatory burdens on industry without delivering measurable improvements to worker protection.

Through this contribution, NIA ensures that industry expertise and practical considerations are incorporated into ECHA's evidence base for future developments. These considerations include the feasibility of measurement methods, proportionality of exposure limits, and real-world implementation challenges faced by industry.
