Summary

The US EPA finalized new regulations for "edge oxidised graphene" under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Manufacturers must notify the EPA 90 days before starting any activities considered "significant new uses" of this substance. The new regulations, which are effective on 26 October 2026, address workplace safety, hazard communication, and manufacturing conditions.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finalized Significant New Use Rules (SNURs) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) for the chemical substance "edge oxidised graphene," identified as "edge oxidized carbon matrix" (PMN P–22–114). The new regulation requires manufacturers and processors to notify the EPA at least 90 days in advance of commencing activities defined as "significant new uses."

For edge oxidised graphene, the SNUR addresses workplace protection, hazard communication, manufacturing conditions, and releases to water. The rule also specifies circumstances where its requirements do not apply, such as when the substance is incorporated into an article or entrained in a cured coating. The finalized rule becomes effective on 26 October 2026. Companies involved in the manufacturing, import, or processing of the specified substance should review the SNUR and associated requirements.

Canada Releases Nanomaterial Risk Assessment Framework Under CEPA

Environment and Climate Change Canada and Health Canada have jointly published a new Framework for the Risk Assessment of Manufactured Nanomaterials under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). The document clarifies how nano-specific characteristics will be factored into regulatory evaluations, confirming that while traditional chemical risk assessment principles remain applicable, they must be supplemented with nano-specific data and characterisation methods. The framework…

How NIA Membership Opened the Door for InFinite Biotech to Shape the Future of Nanomaterial Risk Assessment

At the May 2026 meeting of the ECHA’s Nanomaterial Expert Group (NMEG), NIA Member Infinite Biotech presented a novel “in-vitro-learned digital twin” platform (InFinite™) designed to predict long-term health effects of nanomaterial exposure using advanced New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and digital modelling. The platform combines live cellular monitoring, mechanistic modelling, and in silico disease evolution to generate rapid predictions of long-term toxicity while potentially reducing…
